The town where time stands still. Just 20km South of Peterborough, Terowie became an important part of the northern railway network in the 1880s, and a supply town for the vast grazing country to the north east and to the Broken Hill/Silverton mining communities of that era. The fortunes of the town revolved around the railway system. It was therefore obvious that with the demise of the railway in 1970, Terowie was destined to become yet another “ghost town”. However the Terowie Citizens Association had other ideas.

Designated an historic town, Terowie offers the visitor a wealth of heritage. The main street has retained much of its 19th century character. The Terowie Citizens Association purchased six of its historically important buildings. Great care has been taken in the program to preserve and restore the buildings and retain their authenticity.

There is much to interest the visitor in and around Terowie, especially for those who want to escape the “commercial” tourist areas. The park & playground provide a pleasant picnic area and the Arid Lands Botanic Gardens a lovely walk.

Accommodation in the old style, friendly country tradition is available at the Terowie Hotel, Old Terowie Hospital and Roadhouse Motel. There is a brochure entitled "A Tour of Terowie" available from the Tea rooms. It is an ideal way to either drive or walk around the town at your leisure and learn about the town.
