This vehicle was placed in traffic in 1917 as Narb 12. The carriage was fitted with a shower in 1918 and reclassified Narb 12 in 1946. It was converted to narrow gauge in 1956 and continued in traffic on the Central Australian Railway until 1961 when it was converted back to standard gauge. This vehicle was used as a non air-conditioned accommodation on goods trains until written off in 1979. This carriage is on permanent loan by the Steamtown Railway Preservation Society to the Peterborough Tourist Promotion Association. It was placed on location on the 29th May 1984 and was renovated with the help of Government grant money which employed three unemployed people for three months. There were also many voluntary hours spent by the committee. Opened for business on the 11th of May 1985 at 10.00am but it was not until the 20th of September 1985 when His Excellency, Sir Donald Dunstan, Governor of S.A. officially declared it open for business.

The information centre is open between 10am and 3pm most days and is manned by volunteers.

OFF STREET PARKING

Ask anyone who has ever towed a caravan, trailer or large vehicle and they will tell you that the biggest problem that they face when travelling is finding a parking spot which is big enough to accommodate them and is also close to the town facilities. Peterborough has addressed this problem by providing a large parking area just off the Main Street. When you come into the town from Broken Hill turn left into the Tourist Information Centre (which is an old railway passenger carriage) and drive behind it. The road leads to a large area which will enable you to park your vehicle and walk into the Main Street. If you are coming from the Port Augusta or Port Pirie end of town you will see a sign just past the Railway Hotel which indicates off street parking on the right hand side.

Just look for these signs.
