After the 'Y' was taken out of service it was placed alongside the swimming pool as playground equipment and remained there for 40 years. In the year 2000 the District Council of Peterborough decided to restore the 'Y' and place it in the Main Street. It was shifted from the swimming pool site to the Steamtown Depot on the 18th of January 2000.
Sandblasting of the Y Class was started on the 21st of January and completed on the 27th. Repairs to the train started on the 28th and were completed on the 25th February. Painting commenced on the 9th February and completed on the 27th February.
It was moved to its current site on the 30th June 2000. The painting and sandblasting was carried out by Greg and Troy Madex from Steamtown. Welding repairs were carried out by Stan Collins. Transporting of train to Steamtown and then to its current site by Milton and Dennis Polomka. The spiral staircase was made by Colin Campbell. Overseeing of the Project by Councillor Chris Woodman. Financial costs met by the District Council of Peterborough. Total cost of the project was approx $10,000. | |
