| Peterborough has a proud history, which was built around the railways over a period of 100 years. Unfortunately that industry has all but gone but the memories are still kept alive by the efforts of the Peterborough Tourist Promotion Association through its unique "Tourist Carriage" and the Steamtown Railway Preservation Society. Peterborough has switched its focus to tourism and is endeavouring to present the town as a pleasant place to visit for the estimated 400,000 tourists a year who travel through it Over the last couple of years the local council has set aside money and utilised many Government grants to improve the appearance and lifestyle of the town. Last year the District Council of Peterborough was rewarded for its efforts when it won an award in the state-wide KESAB Tidy Towns Competition for its continued improvement over a 5 year period. In an endeavour to create something unique, the local council and a man by the name of Colin Campbell have come up with the idea of having scale model steam trains placed at all four entrances to the town. Colin is a "retired" blacksmith who learnt his trade in England. He is a very gifted and talented man who over a period of approximately three years between 1997 and 2000 hand made the four models that are on show at every entrance to the town. Please take the time to have a look at these masterpieces then explore the town, meet its people and enjoy our hospitality.
